<br>Upolu Cay is a naturally formed coral cay situated 30 kilometers from Cairns on the Great Barrier Reef. Its protected shallow waters make it the perfect location from which to explore the reef, for both snorkelers and certified and introductory scuba divers.
This 20m luxury cruising cat travels at 23 knots, reducing travelling time to the Great Barrier Reef to just one hour! We are the first Great Barrier Reef tour to arrive at Upolu Cay, and provide you with over an hour to explore the Cay and surrounding reef, uninterrupted from the crowds. You may even want to try your first ever scuba dive, or for the certified diver, enjoy being guided by our qualified instructors on some of the best dive sites on the reef.
Your adventure begins at Cairns' Reef Fleet Terminal, where you are asked to check-in at the checkin desk at 7.15am. Boarding commences on Cairns' Marlin Marina from 7.30am. Enjoy fresh tea, coffee, fruit and muffins on board, prior to the 8am departure. As you cruise to Upolu Cay and Upolu Reef, you can relax in the air-conditioned saloon or on the fresh air sundeck. En route to the Great Barrier Reef, the friendly crew will provide an introductory safety briefing and for those wanting to partake in introductory or certified scuba diving, the paperwork and briefs will be completed on the way out.
First Site – Upolu Reef: You will be amazed and impressed at the Wonder Wall on the Outer Edge of Upolu Reef. Rising 14m from the ocean floor, Wonder Wall plateaus just 0.5m under the surface, making it an ideal snorkel and dive site. It is famous for its amazing variety of hard and soft coral, in addition to fans, giant clams, turtles and a huge diversity and abundance of reef fish of all sizes! The crew will personally care for you and teach you how to snorkel if it is your first time. If you can’t swim, we can use flotation jackets to keep you floating and a crew member will enter the water with you, carrying a life ring for you to hold on to and we can do all the hard work, whilst you relax and look at the beautiful marine life below! If it is your first time diving, we offer the most personal experience in Cairns, as we take only two of you per instructor and hold your hand as you take your first breaths underwater for an unforgettable experience! Enjoy an informative glass bottomed boat tour with our Marine Naturalists who are there to educate you and answer any questions that you may have about this World Heritage Listed Site. You may also join a complimentary adventure drift snorkel tour where we will give you an exciting speed boat ride up to a different section of this reef, allowing you to drift back with the current, under the careful eye of one of our snorkel guides. The guide will show you the best parts of this reef as they give you a marine talk on the beautiful fauna and flora below.
Prior to lunch, we have a permit that allows us to feed the fish for your chance to get some excellent photos! We often get some of the larger species of fish coming in to take advantage of this free feast! Note: Please do not throw in any of your own food scraps as we may only feed 1kg of natural ingredients daily.
Lunch is served at approximately 12:30pm in a self-serve buffet style. Enjoy a sumptuous feast of smoked salmon, chilled prawns, cold chicken and meats, four different salads and fresh breads. While you dine, we cruise slowly to the second site at Upolu Reef.
Second Site – Upolu Reef:This beautiful sand island is covered by water at high tide and exposed at low tide. It is possible for you to make the first footprints in the sand as we drop you off so that you can continue to explore the underwater world. Upolu cay is surrounded by stunning turquoise water and a natural aquarium, which showcases many types of corals, reef fishes, such as the infamous “Nemo”, stingrays and sea stars. Due to its shallow waters it is perfect for beginners and those who are a little nervous. You can snorkel and dive here: all necessary assistance is provided to ensure that every guest can enjoy the reef.
After a full six hours of unrushed pleasure on the reef and cay, cruise home while our crew serve a sumptuous selection of tropical fruit, cheese, crackers and a decadent cake platter. The ultimate way to wind down after a magical day on the one and only Great Barrier Reef! Arrive back into Cairns around 4.30pm.
Scuba Diving
Both certified and introductory scuba diving is available onboard. We advise this to be prebooked to avoid dissapointment as numbers are limited.
We are the only company in Cairns to guarantee only 2 guests per instructor for introductory diving. This is the safest, most enjoyable and personal way to experience your first underwater breaths. We also offer a complimentary guide for certified divers so that they can relax and enjoy their dive, as our knowledgeable crew worry about navigation and show you all of the highlights at each site. Please note that all scuba diving is dependent on passing a dive medical questionnaire on board.
