Australia's Great Barrier Reef is the planets's largest reef ecosystem composed of over 2,900 separate reefs and over 900 islands stretching for over 2,600 kilometres (1,600 mi) over an area of over 344,400 square kilometres (133,000 sq mi). The Great Barrier Reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in north-east Australia.
Cairns is undoubtedly the most popular access point to the Great Barrier Reef, with options to suit just about everybody, however you may also access the reef from Townsville, Mackay, Rockhanmpton or Bundaberg. While located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park the Whitsunday Islands are not actually located on the Great Barrier Reef.
The Great Barrier Reef is the worlds only living structure that can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms. This reef ecosystem is built by billions of tiny creatures, known as coral polyps. This reef supports an amazing diversity of life and was awarded a World Heritage Listing in 1981. America's CNN recently labeled it one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It is also a recognised state icon of Queensland.
A large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps to pretect the reef from the impact of human uses, such as fishing and tourism. Other environmental pressures on the reef and its ecosystem include farming runoff, climate change accompanied by mass coral bleaching, and cyclic population outbreaks of the crown-of-thorns starfish.
The Great Barrier Reef is an extremely popular destination for tourists from both Australia and the rest of the world, especially the northern sections accessed from Cairns and Port Douglas. Tourism is a very important economic activity for the region, generating $1 billion per year, and employing thousands of people.
