About KurandaKuranda established a railway station in the mid 1800's when mining and logging was a big industry on the Atherton Tablelands. Hidden away among the dense tropical rainforest, you can stroll through the markets. Kuranda has become quite a famous tourist destination and recognised for its famous "Kuranda Markets". Whether it be a stroll around the famous markets where you will find a variety of local arts and crafts or to taking a rainforest walk along the many marked tracks or a 1 hour cruise on the Barron river. This vibrant little village is only 27 km North West of Cairns City and has a small population of approx 800. You may wish to spend time at one of thee many village attractions such as Koala Gardens, where you can have your photo taken with a koala as well as see Wallabies, Wombats, Crocodiles and other Australian wildlife. You can also visit the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary where you can walk amongst over 1500 tropical butterflies. Birdworld is our favourite option where you walk around a large aviary with hundreds of birds, many of which are tropical species from this area. Most are very tame and you can hand feed them. Finding your way to Kuranda Village is even more exciting than the destination of Kuranda. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway takes you on a 1. 5 hour journey between Caravonica and Kuranda over the rainforest canopy with breathtaking views of the Coral Sea and stops at Red Peak and Barron Falls. The Kuranda Scenic Railway winds its way through 15 tunnels and over 36 bridges from Cairns to Kuranda Village with a photo stop at the Barron falls, and affords some spectacular scenery en route. It does not matter which direction you travel on Skyrail or the Kuranda Scenic Train - the experience is exhilarating. We like the Skyrail and the way the cable cars are so environmentally friendly. Only a very minimal amount of rainforest was cleared to make way for it, and everything was done by helicopters...there are no roads! It's a great way to learn about the rainforest as well, because there are two stops on the way to/from Kuranda where you can get out of the cable car and have a walk through the rainforest on their low impact boardwalks and visit the info centre. For a different Kuranda Experience, perhaps you would like to spend a few hours with Blazing Saddles, where you can explore the rainforest on horseback or on a ATV (Quad bike). |
