Cairns in January
Things to Do in January.
Whilst it is the "wet" or "monsoon" season in January some great times are still to be had in Cairns. We actually like to call it the "green" season. The rainforest is at it's luscious best and the creeks and rivers are starting to flow. This makes January a perfect time to pay a visit to the quaint little rainforest town of Kuranda on the "Kuranda Skyrail and Scenic Train", you'll get an up close look at the mighty Barron Falls. Maybe you'd like to get a bit closer to it all. Why not try a half day "river tubing" trip on the Mulgrave or "Xtreme White Water Rafting" on the Tully River for the more adventurous.
The majority of the rain tends to fall late afternoon or overnight, meaning your days shouldn't be affected. This means you can still visit the Great Barrier Reef. An option that is very popular all year, but expecially suited to January is a cruise to "Green Island & The Reef". You'll get to spend the morning on ever popular Green Island and then visit an outer reef pontoon for snorkelling and/or scuba diving in the afternoon.
What is the Weather like in Cairns in January?
Whilst January is included in Cairns "wet" or "green" season the monsoon trough typically is much further north during January. This means that while it may rain it hopefully won't rain too much. Typically January rains tend to fall in the evenings and overnight. This rain will make sure the rainforest is at it's luscious green best and also make sure all the waterfalls are flowing well.
